Piano for Dummies

I’ve always liked the music that piano makes. That’s why I’ve always wanted to learn how to play it. But something has always held me back from trying. It’s just that the piano is such an intimidating instrument. It looks like it would be difficult to learn how to play one. I’m not sure I can all those note values. I have never even tried reading those round things with tails and dots. The only thing I have ever done is listen to somebody else play the piano and then sing along. I do admit though that sometimes it get’s frustrating if the pianist doesn’t know the song I’m asking for. What’s even more frustrating is the envy in my heart that just won’t sleep every time my family gathers around the piano. I belong to a clan that is musically gifted where practically everybody can play the piano and the violin and the guitar and the saxophone and on and on this list goes. I’m about the only one who sings and I’m not even really good at that.

My sister who happens to be my dearest friend would always look at me with pity. But she’s angry with me too. She has always told me that learning to play the piano it isn’t exactly brain surgery. It only takes practice, time, patience and determination. Things I greatly lack. I used to pretend to be sick whenever our piano teacher comes and it has always made my mom angry. In frustration she has finally left me to my own ways. Then I stumbled upon a website that offered piano for dummies. It made think there is hope for people like me after all.

I may not be note reading wiz but I enjoy electronic and digital gadgets. I love surfing the net and it is finally proving to be an ally in my struggle with the piano. I guess I am what you call a visual learner who can only learn with colored images and charts. Those black and white piano pieces are really a bore. I also am an auditory learner, I like to hear and then follow something my piano teachers never had the patience for. But this piano for dummies program is great.

I am so glad there are now videos and dvd’s and on-line tutorials. They sure make learning to play the piano easy to accomplish and more importantly they’re fun. It feels like you’re just engaged in an interactive game rather than seating stiffly waiting for your instructor’s discouraging assessments of your skills. I’m not a dummy after all. My learning style is just different and it’s not bad being different.
